Halloween

HAPPY HALLOWEEN!!

Thanks to our librarians we had a place to raise our trout!  Not only did they give us space in the library, they also got into the project on Halloween.  They both dressed up as trout fisherman!  The children got a huge kick out of this!  See the picture below of their wonderful costumes!

Our trout are doing amazing!  There are a ton swimming around, and they are full of energy.

Mr. Farmer

Mr. Doug Framer came to Ritchie today to speak to the classes about the trout.  He spoke to every single classroom in the school about conservation, the parts of the fish tank, and the trout themselves.  The students asked many questions  and learned a lot about our project!  Our trout are still in the Fry stage and are not very active.  Check back often for updated information and pictures!

Hatching Eggs!

On Friday our eggs began to hatch!!!  Many of our alevin have traveled out of the egg basket and are laying under our (protected) filter!  The fourth graders spent several days researching and learning about trout, their habitats, ecosystems, and life cycles.  As a concluding project they created posters to show what they learned!  The pictures below are of our new babies and the students' research.

The eggs are here!

This morning at 8 am our trout eggs arrived!  Below are pictures of their arrival and being placed in the tank.  They had to be brought over in a cooler, were wrapped in paper towel and gently placed in the 52 degree water in our tank!  We had to acclimate them to the water for about 30 minutes before putting them into an egg basket.  Enjoy the pictures!

Welcome!

Welcome to Ritchie's new blog, Ritchie Trout in the Classroom!  We hope you enjoy watching our trout progress from egg to adult! We are working with a program called Trout in the classroom.  If you are interested in learning more, please feel free to go to this site:  http://www.troutintheclassroom.org/

How did Ritchie become part of this program?

A former parent emailed us and asked if we wanted to participate in Trout in the Classroom.  Many other schools in Fauquier County have been participating for years!  We thought this was a good opportunity for our students to do something positive for our environment, while learning about habits, ecosystems, life cycles, and much more!

What will this project entail?

We will be receiving trout eggs on October 5, 2011, which is TOMORROW!!!!  The children ( at some point his month) will have a short lesson about the trout and why they are so important to our environment.  Grade K-3 will get to experience the life cycle of a trout, and watch it grow in front of their eyes!  The fourth and fifth graders will have a chance to learn about cleaning the tank, feeding the fish, and the over all care of the trout.  Some of the fourth and fifth graders will also go on a trip in the spring to a local stream to release the trout!

Please come back to our blog often!  The teachers and students will update it as we learn and see new things happening!
